Dawson was a child when he appeared briefly on Sesame Street. Photographers Larry Clark and Harmony Korine discovered her on her front porch step when she was 15 years old. Korine believed she’d be ideal for a part he’d written for the controversial 1995 film Kids. She went on to perform a variety of roles in films, both minor and large, including Rent, He Got Game and Men in Black II.
Dawson appeared alongside Edward Norton in Spike Lee’s film 25th Hour (2002). She portrayed Roxana, Alexander the Great’s wife, in Oliver Stone’s 2004 film Alexander. Dawson made her stage debut in 2005 as Julia in the revival of “Shakespeare in the Park” at the Public Theater.
