Based on the first book in Nancy Springer’s young adult fiction series of the same name, Enola Holmes is a 2020 mystery movie. The story centres on the teenage sister of the already-famous Sherlock Holmes, who travels to London in an effort to locate her missing mother but ends up on a thrilling adventure, teaming up with a runaway lord as they try to solve a mystery that poses a threat to the entire nation. Harry Bradbeer, working from a Jack Thorne screenplay, directed the movie. In addition to playing the title role, Millie Bobby Brown also served as the movie’s producer. Helena Bonham Carter, Sam Claflin, and Henry Cavill also appear in the movie.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Netflix acquired the distribution rights to the movie that Warner Bros. Pictures had initially intended for a theatrical release. The release date for Enola Holmes is September 23, 2020. Critics gave the movie favourable reviews and highlighted Brown’s performance. In its first four weeks of release, it was watched by an estimated 76 million households, making it one of the most popular original Netflix movies. On November 4, 2022, a follow-up, Enola Holmes 2, was made available on Netflix.

Plot

In the Holmes family, Enola Holmes is the youngest child. She defies the social expectations placed on women at the time by being incredibly intelligent, perceptive, and insightful. Eudoria, her mother, has taught her everything from chess to jujitsu and has pushed her to be independent and with a strong will.

Enola awakens on her sixteenth birthday to discover that her mother has vanished, leaving only a few presents behind. She meets her brothers Mycroft and Sherlock a week later. Mycroft, who is her legal guardian, plans to send her away to a finishing school run by the strict Miss Harrison because Sherlock thinks she is intelligent while Mycroft thinks she is troublesome.

Inspector Mycroft has Inspector Lestrade of Scotland Yard search for Enola. She discovers pamphlets and a safehouse containing explosives, and learns that Eudoria is part of a radical group of suffragettes. She fights back, ignites the explosives in the safehouse and escapes. Enola is caught by Lestrade and imprisoned in Miss Harrison’s finishing school. Sherlock visits her and admits he is impressed by her detective work.

Tewkesbury’s grandmother is revealed as Linthorn’s contractor. As a staunch traditionalist, she did not want him to take his father’s place in the House of Lords and vote for the Reform Bill.

Production

A film adaptation of the Nancy Springer book series The Enola Holmes Mysteries was in development at Legendary Pictures, with Harry Bradbeer set to direct. Millie Bobby Brown wanted energy, emotion and eccentricity as key elements of the film. Henry Cavill, Helena Bonham Carter, Adeel Akhtar and Fiona Shaw joined the cast. Benthall Hall was used as the exterior for the Holmes family residence Ferndell Hall. Approximately thirty costumes were created for Enola, and costumes had to be repeated several more times because of the physicality of the role.

The powderpuff dress was based on theatrical costumes of the period, and Boyle wanted to use red, the color of courage. The Conan Doyle Estate filed a lawsuit against Netflix over the film Sherlock. They claimed it violated copyright by depicting Sherlock Holmes as having emotions. This aspect of the character was only described in stories published between 1923 and 1927. The lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice by stipulation of all parties.
