Noem entered the political arena in 2006, seeking election to the state legislature of South Dakota. Near Noem’s home, in the 6th state legislative district, which includes the counties of Clark, Hamlin, Beadle, Codington, and Kingsbury, she ran for office. In that election, she received 39% of the vote and ultimately won the seat. In 2008, she ran again. As a result, she received 41% of the vote and was re-elected. Noem spent a total of four years, or two terms, in the South Dakota legislature.

Kristi Noem served as an assistant majority leader in the South Dakota legislature. In the House, she served on the Taxation and State Affairs Committees.

Noem also backed legislation to reduce South Dakota’s compulsory school age from 18 to 16. She claimed that the increased graduation rate in the state was not a result of the higher compulsory attendance age.

Noem decided in 2010 that she wanted to become a member of Congress. She sought election to the congressional district at-large seat that South Dakota currently holds in the United States Congress.
