Coldplay Delivers ‘Love Story’ in Vienna, Honoring Taylor Swift’s Fans Who Couldn’t Attend the ‘Eras Tour’ Concerts
Two weeks after Taylor Swift was forced to postpone her Eras Tour dates in Vienna, Coldplay vocalist Chris Martin and his opening act, Maggie Rogers, played the song “Love Story.”
At Ernst Happel Stadium on Wednesday, August 21, Martin, 47, and Rogers, 30, performed a copy of the 2008 smash song. Swift, 34, was supposed to appear on August 8, 9, and 10 but canceled those dates due to a suspected terror plot.
“I don’t want to get in trouble with Taylor if this isn’t good,” Martin remarked, dedicating the song to Swift’s supporters who were meant to see her perform in Vienna. And it would be amazing if you could sing along with us.
During the acoustic set, which featured Martin strumming the guitar and Rogers channeling Swift’s emotive singing style, the audience followed Martin’s lead and joined in on the song. After that, Rogers shared the video on Instagram, tagging Swift and wrote, “from vienna with love.”
Swift made her first public statement since the cancellations earlier on Wednesday.
“Our Vienna shows were canceled, which was devastating,” the actress said in a long Instagram caption. Because so many people had made plans to attend those events, learning of the cancellations made me feel both extremely guilty and afraid.
However, I was also really appreciative of the authorities as it was because of them that we were mourning concerts rather than lives.
Swift went on, “I was encouraged by the love and harmony I witnessed among the fans who came together. I made the decision that all of my efforts needed to be directed toward assisting in the safety of the almost 500,000 attendees of my London events.
In order to achieve that goal, my team and I collaborated closely with stadium employees and British authorities every day. I would want to express our gratitude to them for everything they accomplished.
She went on to explain why, upon learning of the foiled plot, she decided to keep quiet.
She wrote, “Let me be very clear: if I think speaking about something publicly might provoke those who would want to harm the fans who come to my shows, then I will not speak about it.”
“In situations like this one, remaining silent really means exercising self control and holding off on speaking until the appropriate moment. My top objective was making it safely through our European tour, and I’m relieved to report that we succeeded.
Tuesday, August 21, marked the end of Swift’s European leg of her Eras Tour in London. She will take a two-month sabbatical before returning to the stage in Miami in October.
