Paul Farmer, a well-known American physician and humanitarian, died on February 21, 2022, at the age of 62. Dr Sheila Davis, CEO of his nonprofit organisation Partners In Health, announced his passing.
Although it is tragic that Paul Farmer has passed away, Partners in Health will keep working to realise his global vision. Paul taught the value of friendship, camaraderie, and love to everyone who was close to him. We send his family our deepest condolences.
Who Is Paul Farmer?
Paul Edward Farmer, an American physician and medical anthropologist, pursued both careers. In addition to chairing the department and holding the position of Kolokotrones University Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine, Farmer received his MD and PhD at Harvard.
When Partners In Health (PIH), a global non-profit that provides direct medical aid as well as advocacy and research on behalf of the ill and poor, was created in 1987, he was a co-founder and the organization’s chief strategy. He held dual positions at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, including director of the division and professor of medicine.
What Caused Paul Farmer’s Death?
The group stated in a tweet that Dr Paul Farmer, the founder of Partners In Health, passed unexpectedly in his sleep while visiting Rwanda. Although the particular cause of death has not been made public, he was 62 years old when he passed away. The farmer was lecturing in Rwanda at the University of Global Health Equity, a medical centre he co-founded.
Paul Farmer’s departure is tragic, but Partners in Health will carry out his plan for the world moving forward, the organization’s CEO Dr Sheila Davis said in a statement. “Paul taught all those around him the power of accompaniment, love for one another, and solidarity. Our hearts go out to Didi and their three children.”

Paul Farmer Early Life
The farmer grew up in Weeki Wachee, Florida, but was born in North Adams, Massachusetts. Farmer’s father had transformed an old school bus into a mobile home before he and his family of eight relocated to Florida. A farmer’s childhood included some time in Alabama. Farmer described his father as a “free spirit” who finally pursued commercial fishing and moved his family to live on a houseboat in the Gulf of Mexico.
Following that, Farmer’s father docked the houseboat in Jenkins Creek, a wild backwater where the family took baths, and fetched bottles of drinking water from Brooksville. The farmer put education first and excelled in school. Farmers’ parents often read serious literature to their children in order to encourage them to learn as much as they could about everything the world had to offer.
The family was forced to regularly labour in a number of places due to financial difficulties. When the farmer’s family went citrus picking with migrant Haitian workers one summer, it was his first of many interactions with Haitians.
Paul Farmer Career
In 1987, Farmer co-founded Partners In Health with classmates Jim Yong Kim, Ophelia Dahl, Thomas J. White, and Todd McCormack. Farmer left PIH in February 2022 with 16 facilities around the country and about 7,000 employees. On Haiti’s Central Plateau, in the town of Cange, PIH was established.
PIH in Cange was the sister company of PIH, Zanmi Lasante. By building homes, schools, and community sewage and water systems, Zanmi Lasante enhanced the amenities and resources available to the community in central Haiti. In addition to successfully immunising every child in the area, the group was able to reduce the incidence of hunger and newborn death.

Throughout the HIV crisis, Zanmi Lasante focused on AIDS prevention and was successful in reducing HIV transmission rates from mothers to infants to 4%. Farmer and another PIH employee, Jim Yong Kim, were chosen by the World Health Organization in 1999 to support international multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) treatment programmes, ensuring the success of medicine distribution.
Farmer began specific drug-therapy efforts for patients in Haiti, Peru, and Russia with the help of a $44.7 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This programme had some of the greatest cure rates in the world, demonstrating that treating MDR TB in developing countries with effective delivery techniques was viable at a fair cost.
Paul Farmer Personal Life
Didi Bertrand Farmer, a medical anthropologist and community health specialist from Haiti, was Farmer’s wife and was in charge of numerous programmes at Partners in Health. She has put a lot of effort into empowering young women and girls in Haiti and Rwanda in her most recent ventures. They have three children together.
38 Harvard professors wrote a letter to The Harvard Crimson in February 2022 defending Professor John Comaroff. Comaroff was found to have violated the rules of professional and sexual behaviour at the university. One of the many signatories, the farmer, said he wanted to retract his name after students sued the university over Comaroff’s actions and its silence.
