Momoa, an only child, was born to Joseph Momoa, a painter, and Coni (Lemke), a photographer, in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 1, 1979. At the age of six months, he and his mother relocated to Norwalk, Iowa. They remained there until he finished from high school and traveled back to Honolulu to enroll at the University of Hawaii.
