Keith Douglas Sweat was born in Harlem, New York City, on July 22, 1961. Juanita Thompson, his mother, was a hairdresser, and Charles Sweat, his father, worked in a factory. Juanita raised Keith and his four siblings alone after Charles died in 1973. Sweat went to City College and worked as a night stock boy at Macy’s.
On the weekends, he played with a band called Jamilah. Later, he worked in the mail room at the brokerage firm Paine Webber, and within four years, he was a brokerage assistant at the New York Stock Exchange. Keith also worked at the New York Mercantile Exchange as a supervisor.

Sweat sang as the lead singer of the band Jamilah in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey. In 1984, he left the band to pursue a solo career. He recorded a few songs for the independent label Stadium Records. Keith signed with Entertainment Records in 1987, and in November of that year, he put out his first album, “Make It Last Forever.
