He began working for the Detroit Lions in 1976 as their special team’s assistant coach before expanding his responsibilities in 1977 to include tight ends and wide receivers. On January 9, 1978, he was fired along with the rest of the coaching staff and head coach Tommy Hudspeth. He served as the Denver Broncos special teams coach and defensive assistant during the 1978 season.
